Celebrate Economic & Community Development
Rotary recognizes October as Economic and Community Development Month
Rotary Districts around the world will be called to focus during October on ideas and the power of economic and community development. District 7070 hosts an article suggesting ideas for club involvement in ECD. In a tip of the hat to the Rotarian Action Group for Community Economic Development (RAGCED) that had it’s beginnings in Microcredit, the article references 190 million people funding their businesses through microfinance. Helpful suggestions of what can your club do include: partner with a local microlender; develop mobile banking resources such as cell phone access; purchase goods and supplies locally in support of the local merchants.
Then turning to the huge number of people living on less than $1.25 a day (1.4 billion) the authors suggest we can expand vocational training opportunities, send a vocational training team to teach business leaders and partner with a cooperative that embraces democratic development of members ownership of community assets.
The article, intended to launch further discussions encourages us to check out the Areas of Focus brochure which includes ECD and secondly, to support entrepreneurs and small businesses in developing communities. The success of local business leaders can multiply employment.
